Situated in the heart of St Bees, The Byres Tan is a ground floor apartment in a barn conversion on a working farm. Thoughtfully restored with contemporary interiors, it’s ideal for a small family, couple, or solo traveller looking to explore the West Cumbrian countryside and coast.
Stone House Farm is the only working farm in St Bees, and is home to 250 lambing ewes, a small flock of pedigree Texel sheep, and a couple of ponies. For those bringing their dog on holiday, there is a dedicated dog exercise field, but please ensure that dogs are kept on a lead elsewhere on the farm to avoid worrying the livestock.
St Bees marks the start of the Coast to Coast Walk, devised by Alfred Wainwright, which covers 192 miles crossing three National Parks, concluding at Robin Hood’s Bay. There are plenty of other shorter walking and cycling routes in the area running along the coast or around the outskirts of the Lake District.
The beach at St Bees is a mile long stretch of red sand backed by cliffs. At the northern end lies St Bees Head, home to an RSPB nature reserve which supports north west England's only cliff-nesting seabird colony. Keep an eye out for guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and fulmars, while taking in the spectacular views across to the Isle of Man. The surrounding stretch of coast is also popular for coasteering, surfing, and land yachting.
With the Lake District National Park on the doorstep there are no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy. Challenge yourself to reach the peak of Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain; sail, kayak, or paddleboard across Lake Windermere; or journey deep underground with a guided caving experience.
Other attractions in the park well worth a visit include Beatrix Potter’s holiday home, Hill Top; The Lakes Distillery; Castlerigg Stone Circle; and the Ravenglass and Eskdale heritage railway offering steam train journeys through stunning scenery.
St Bees has a village store, a handful of pubs serving food, an 11th century priory, and a railway station with direct trains to Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Ulverston, and Grange-over-Sands.
