Farm Stays In Wales

Escape to Wales and experience the charm of rural life with a holiday on a working farm or smallholding. From family friendly barn conversions and traditional farmhouses to contemporary lodges and handcrafted shepherd’s huts, our collection of farm stays offers a choice of unique places to stay in some of the most beautiful landscapes across Wales.

Farms in Wales

Around 90% of land in Wales is devoted to agriculture, with livestock grazing the backbone of the Welsh countryside.

Sheep farming dominates in the upland areas, where hardy varieties of Welsh Mountain sheep are well adapted to the harsh conditions. Sheep are raised for both meat and wool, with Welsh Lamb being the primary product exported across the UK and to international markets.

Hardy breeds of cattle like Welsh Blacks are also kept on hill farms, while the lowlands support herds of beef cattle alongside small farms raising less common animals including goats and alpacas, as well as pig, poultry, and dairy cows.

In the more fertile areas of southern Wales, there are a small number of arable farms mainly producing animal fodder, while a few horticultural farms grow potatoes, brassicas, and salad crops. Wales is also home to a handful of vineyards, where grape varieties have been selected for their ability to ripen in the country’s cool, damp climate.

If you want animals to be part of our farm stay experience, Wales is an excellent choice. Depending on the farm, you may have the chance to feed new born lambs, watch sheepdogs as they round up the flock, or enjoy a walk with alpacas.

Accommodation ranges from contemporary barn conversions and traditional farmhouses and cottages, to secluded lodges and stylish glamping pods tucked away in fields surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in Wales.

Where to stay in Wales

Despite its small size, Wales has a remarkable variety of landscapes. The north is mostly rural with a strong Welsh language culture. Explore the market towns and villages of Gwynedd and Conwy County set against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery, or head to Anglesey for its laid back beaches and excellent watersports.

In Mid Wales, Ceredigion is ideal for a peaceful escape with the remote Cambrian Mountains, pretty harbours, and the chance to spot marine life, including bottlenose dolphins.

Wales is also home three National Parks, each with its own unique distinctive character. Snowdonia is wild and rugged with dramatic peaks and deep glacial valleys, while Bannau Brycheiniog, formerly known as the Brecon Beacons, has a much greener landscape of open heathland and rounded sandstone summits. Further west, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is entirely different with secluded coves, volcanic headlands, and limestone cliffs.

Wherever you choose to stay, a farm holiday offers a peaceful base from which to explore the spectacular Welsh countryside and a welcoming place to return to at the end of the day.

Farm stays for families, couples, and groups

A farm stay in Wales is a fantastic choice for families, couples, or groups of friends who want to experience the heart of rural life.

Spend your days walking through valleys, cycling along quiet country lanes, climbing mountains, spotting wildlife, sailing along the coast, or exploring ancient castles, before returning to the farm to relax in the evening. A hot tub is the perfect way to end the day, while a games room can keep everyone entertained when the Welsh weather has other ideas.

For couples, a traditional stone cottage or glamping retreat is perfect for a romantic escape. Look for a property with an open fire or wood burning stove for a cosy way to warm up after a day outdoors.

And there’s no need to leave your four-legged friend at home. Many of our dog friendly farm stays in Wales put you within easy reach of miles of countryside and coastal walks. Just remember to keep dogs close and on a lead around livestock.
