St Ives is a picturesque coastal town with golden sandy beaches including Porthminster which has a tropical feel with calm, clear waters ideal for swimming, and Porthmeor Beach. Sheltered in a small cove, it’s the town’s premier surfing spot with Atlantic swells and a laid-back atmosphere.
On the other side of St Ives Bay, the stretch of coastline at Godrevy has sand dunes, a lighthouse, and opportunities to spot wildlife including a colony of grey seals.
The town is home to the Tate St Ives art gallery, exhibiting works by iconic 20th century artists including Barbara Hepworth, Marlow Moss, and Patrick Heron. The Tate group also manages the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in the town, preserving her studio and garden much as they when she lived and worked there. Leach Pottery is also well worth a visit, home to a studio, shop, and learning centre.
Lining St Ives’ narrow, cobbled streets are a fantastic range of independent boutiques, craft shops, galleries, and places to eat.
Tulip Barn is a good base for exploring West Cornwall’s other popular hotspots. Sennen can be reached in just over half an hour from where an easy walk over rugged cliffs leads to Land’s End, while at Marazion, visitors can take a motorboat ride or walk the causeway to St Michael’s Mount with a medieval castle and subtropical gardens.
Other attractions nearby include the RSPB nature reserve at Hayle estuary, Paradise Park and Jungle Barn home to over 1,000 birds and animals, and the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.
St Erth has a village store with a post office, a traditional pub serving food, and a railway station with direct trains to Penzance, Truro, Bodmin Parkway, Plymouth, and Exeter.
