Arriving at Eleven Diabaig Cottage is one of those moments that you’ll remember forever.
The best location in the Scottish Highlands if you want to be between coast and mountains, and simply get away from it all. Diabaig is relatively little known, which is surprising because it’s arguably one of the best little places in the whole of Scotland. This crofting community is at the road end, 9 miles west of Torridon and its magnificent mountain range. The road to Diabaig is otherworldly, like a rollercoaster in places, and it’s honestly one of the best drives in Europe. When you arrive after such a decent drive the place itself surpasses already lofty expectations. Diabaig Cottage is in an elevated position looking down across the other small collection of attractive houses in the village to its charming and historical harbour where a fantastic restaurant and bar awaits. Sheep stroll freely around and which are owned by the property’s owner who lives nearby, so if you visit in the spring and want to hold a lamb, just ask.
The house is a great holiday home for six people, whether it’s family or group of friends. Originally a croft house, built in the 19th century, it has been lovingly extended over the years to provide an excellent sized property. You enter the house and immediately find yourself in a sun room perfect for that morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine. The view is to die for and as well as the local sheep and chickens strolling past, you’ll see red deer, pine marten and eagles passing by too. The binoculars are there for the dolphins and whales. From the sun room the hallway leads to the living room which is spacious and comfortable, and again has an unrivalled view. The living room has a wood burner (kindling and logs are supplied and more can be purchased locally), TV, DVD player and a selection of books. Beyond the living room the enormous kitchen/dining room awaits. It’s a modern extension on the rear of this heritage property. There’s a utility room off of the kitchen and the large family bathroom beyond. Back to the hallway, the master bedroom is on the ground floor and has the most incredible view down to the natural harbour of Diabaig.
