Barnacle Lodge

Newton-by-the-Sea,
Beadnell,
Northumberland,
England

Why you'll love staying here

Situated in Beadnell Bay just minutes from a secluded beach, Barnacle is a contemporary, New England style lodge on a family-run working farm. With open-plan living and stylish interiors, it’s an ideal base for a family or couple looking to explore the Northumbrian coast and countryside.

Outside, the lodge benefits from a south-facing decked garden with wonderful views across Embleton Bay towards Dunstanburgh Castle. Children will enjoy the enclosed play area, complete with swings, slides, and a climbing frame, a safe space to play and burn off energy. The farm trains racehorses, which can be seen grazing in the neighbouring fields alongside sheep, while in spring, guests may also spot newborn lambs. Free-roaming chickens, turkeys, ducks, and peacocks wander the grounds, with fresh eggs available for breakfast.

A path from the farm leads directly down to Link House beach, a wide stretch of golden sand backed by sand dunes, perfect for long, bracing walks, building sandcastles, or going for a paddle. From here, the coast path leads to Craster in the south and Seahouses in the north where boat trips depart to Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands. The coast is also excellent for watersports with surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling, and diving all available nearby.

The historic market town of Alnwick is around 20 minutes away, home to an impressive castle, famous as a filming location in the Harry Potter films, the beautiful Alnwick Garden, and one of the country's largest second-hand bookshops. The picturesque village of Bamburgh is also within a 20 minute drive, where visitors can explore its iconic castle and discover the story of Grace Darling at the museum dedicated to her life.

Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland National Park, renowned for its dark skies, wild moorlands, pristine rivers, ancient woodlands, and Roman ruins can both be reached in around an hour.

Low Newton-by-the-Sea is a pretty fishing village, almost entirely owned by the National Trust, with a nature reserve, whitewashed cottages and a 16th-century inn serving food. A farm shop can be found in nearby Embleton, around two miles away, while supermarkets and a wider range of amenities are available in Alnwick and Seahouses. Alnmouth has a railway station with direct services to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Newcastle, and Edinburgh.
