Why you'll love staying here

West Bowden Farm is a well-presented barn conversion set on a working sheep farm in the peaceful village of Knowstone. Just a short distance from the dramatic landscapes of Exmoor National Park, it is ideally placed for families or groups of friends looking to explore North Devon’s beautiful countryside and coastline.

Set around a courtyard opposite the owner’s 17th-century thatched farmhouse, the barn has been thoughtfully restored with comfort in mind. Traditional furnishings sit alongside modern touches such as underfloor heating, ensuring a warm and welcoming stay throughout the year.

The spacious country-style kitchen offers plenty of storage and a full range of modern appliances, making it easy to prepare relaxed home-cooked meals. A kitchen table provides the perfect spot for hearty farmhouse breakfasts or somewhere to gather with a drink and chat while dinner is being prepared.

Next door, the large open-plan living room is a wonderful space for spending time together. A generous dining table is ideal for more formal meals, while comfortable sofas invite you to unwind in the evenings with a film or a good book. French doors open onto the garden, filling the room with natural light and framing lovely views across the surrounding farmland towards the moors.

All three bedrooms are located on the first floor, each benefiting from its own en-suite bathroom, with one of the rooms arranged as a family bedroom, ideal for those travelling with children. With whitewashed walls, exposed beams, crisp linens, and views over the farmland, the bedrooms are calm and comfortable spaces for a restful night’s sleep.

Outside, the patio is a real sun trap, with outdoor dining furniture for morning coffee or leisurely al fresco lunches. Overlooking a charming duck pond, and with free-range chickens wandering the grounds, spending time outside offers a genuine glimpse into rural life.

Guests are also welcome to explore the farm, exercise their dogs in the surrounding fields, and meet the friendly sheep. In spring, newborn lambs are a particular delight for children. Footpaths from the farm lead directly onto the moorland, where there is an abundance of wildlife, including butterflies, birds such as linnets, Dartford warblers, stonechats, and yellowhammers, as well as herds of red deer and wild ponies.

The nearby market town of South Molton offers a good selection of independent shops, traditional pubs, and welcoming restaurants. Regular markets are still held in the town’s historic square, providing a wonderful opportunity to sample the area’s renowned local produce, from homegrown vegetables and honey to handmade sausages and freshly caught fish.
