Robin’s Nest Lodge is a luxurious rural retreat on the West Down Estate, just a short distance from Exmoor National Park. Set beside a former gallop and surrounded by mature woodland, this timber-clad hideaway offers stylish accommodation for anyone seeking a peaceful escape to the countryside.
Inside, the lodge has an open-plan living area with a compact but well-equipped kitchen, and a dining table positioned by a large picture window that frames beautiful views across the farmland. Comfortable seating surrounds a wood-burning stove, the perfect spot to unwind with a glass of wine after a day exploring the local area.
Outside, there is a covered decked terrace furnished with rocking chairs for leisurely afternoons. Cosy blankets are provided for cooler evenings, so you can sit back in comfort, listening for the hoot of an owl or watching bats flit by at dusk. There is also an outdoor jacuzzi bath, ideal for a long soak as the sun sets, and a fire pit where you can gather to toast marshmallows late into the night.
Guests are free to explore the estate’s grounds, home to an abundance of wildlife, including a herd of red deer that roam the land.
Just a short drive away lies the historic town of South Molton. Dating back to Saxon times, this classic market town centres around a pretty square lined with handsome period buildings. Traditional markets are held regularly and are an excellent way to sample the region’s acclaimed produce, from seasonal fruit and vegetables to handmade sausages and fresh fish.
Nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers will enjoy a visit to Wistlandpound Reservoir on the edge of Exmoor. The site boasts species-rich grassland where orchids grow, and a pergola walkway leading to the water’s edge, offering superb views of wildfowl. Fishing for brown trout is also available here, making it a favourite spot for anglers seeking a more natural, tranquil setting.
For an unforgettable encounter with the famed Exmoor wild ponies, head to the Exmoor Pony Centre near Dulverton. This charitable organisation is dedicated to their welfare and offers the chance to learn about the breed’s history and its life on the moor. The centre also offers guided pony treks, stopping at sites such as the ancient Tarr Steps, the spectacular Punch Bowl viewpoint, and the sixth-century Caratacus Stone.
Along the North Exmoor coastline, you’ll find several beautiful beaches. Combe Martin offers a sheltered bay that reveals soft sand at low tide and is renowned for its excellent rock pools. Meanwhile, Croyde Bay is known as North Devon’s surfing capital, with a family-friendly beach and a charming nearby village complete with traditional thatched pubs.
Distances are calculated “as the crow flies”, so actual driving, cycling, and walking distances may differ.
