Lying on the banks of Cowlands Creek, just ten miles from Falmouth, Penjerrick is a charming stone cottage set on a historic country estate. The cottage has been thoughtfully restored to retain its rustic character, while providing comfortable accommodation for a family or couple looking to explore this beautiful part of the West Country.
Highlights include exposed ceiling beams, an original fireplace now housing a wood burning stove, and roll-top baths. Guests should be aware that the cottage is accessed via a narrow country lane which may be a challenge for some drivers.
Outside, Penjerrick Cottage has an enclosed garden with a barbecue area, and stunning views across the creek, with the chance to spot little egrets, kingfishers, and herons.
Tregothnan Estate benefits from a unique microclimate, making it one of the few places in the UK where Camellia sinensis can be successfully cultivated to produce English tea. Manuka bushes also flourish across the estate, providing the nectar used to create its renowned honey. Guests are welcome to walk along the creekside path, through the kea plum orchards, secret jungle gardens, and tea plantations.
The estate offers a number of experiences where visitors can learn about the tea making process, partake in a guided tasting of teas from around the world, pick their ow tea, or learn about the workings of a bee colony on a beekeeping workshop. The owners can also arrange foraging walks, boat hire, private dining, and flowers and champagne on arrival.
Falmouth is a picturesque harbour town, home to the National Maritime Museum which houses a collection of vintage boats and interactive displays showcasing the area’s maritime heritage. Its high street has an excellent range of indecent shops, pubs, and places to eat.
From the harbour, take a ferry to the lovely fishing village of St Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula with one of Henry VIII’s best preserved coastal fortresses, sail up the River Fal to Truro, or hop on a wildlife cruise for the chance to spot whales, dolphins, and a multitude of seabirds.
Trebah Garden, a subtropical paradise with a Gunnera jungle, a stunning array of hydrangeas, rhododendrons, magnolias, and camellias, and its own private beach, is a short drive away, while The Eden Project can be reached in around an hour.
Penjerrick Cottage is also well placed for exploring the Lizard Peninsula, famous for its unique serpentine rock, dramatic coastal scenery, and rare plants and wildflowers.
Other attractions nearby include Trelissick Garden, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, the Museum of Cornish Life, and Loe Beach Watersports Centre with kayaks and paddleboards available to hire.
With its elegant Georgian architecture, farmer’s markets, Gothic Revival cathedral, and the Royal Cornwall Museum with extensive displays on Cornish heritage, as well as an excellent range of shops, restaurants, and pubs, Truro is a 15 minute drive away. The city also has a railway station with direct trains to Bodmin Parkway, Penzance, Plymouth, and Exeter.
