The Granary at Westcott Farm is a charming barn conversion set in an idyllic valley between the Brendon Hills and Exmoor National Park. Comfortably furnished throughout, it offers delightful accommodation for a family or group of friends seeking a peaceful rural escape.
At the heart of the home is the open-plan living area, positioned on the first floor to make the most of the stunning countryside views through three south-facing windows. Original features, including timber beams and exposed stone walls, enhance its rustic appeal. The country-style kitchen is well equipped with everything needed for preparing home-cooked meals to enjoy around the spacious dining table, while the lounge provides plenty of comfortable seating for relaxing with a favourite box set or partaking in a friendly board game.
Downstairs, a useful boot room has ample space for coats, shoes, bikes, and outdoor equipment. There are also two inviting bedrooms, each with its own en-suite shower room and designed with comfort in mind, ensuring a restful night’s sleep, broken only by birdsong in the morning.
Outside, an enclosed patio furnished with an outdoor dining set and BBQ is a lovely spot for a leisurely al fresco lunch or an evening glass of wine as the sun sets over the fields.
Westcott Farm is primarily a sheep farm, with a large lambing barn operating at full capacity in the spring. You’ll also find productive free-range hens and Indian Runner ducks on site, and it’s common to spot red, fallow, and roe deer around the farm.
Although dogs are not permitted at the cottage, guests are welcome to bring their horse on holiday. The farm offers modern stabling in a newly converted American Barn, along with a wash-down area, a large secure tack room with drying facilities, and individual turnout paddocks on request. Direct access to excellent hacking, including the renowned Coleridge Way bridle path, makes exploring the countryside on horseback a real pleasure.
The Granary lies on the edge of the pretty village of Luxborough. Many of the cottages here are thatched, and the 18th-century village inn is well regarded. The Washford River rises near the village and winds through the valley, while the nearby town of Pooltown takes its name from the many pools that form along its course. Once a centre for mining, the area is now dominated by farming and forestry. At around 600ft above sea level, Luxborough is an excellent base for exploring the deep woodlands of the Brendon Hills.
Exmoor is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, with its dramatic geological formations, miles of breathtaking coastline, and the famous wild ponies.
Around an hour’s drive from The Granary is the Valley of Rocks, a U-shaped dry valley beloved by walkers. The impressive rock formations, wild goats, and sweeping sea views are truly spectacular on a summer’s day, yet equally impressive in the colder months.
The magnificent Wimbleball Lake, a large reservoir offers a network of walking and cycling trails across the 530 acre site. A range of outdoor activities is available, whether you enjoy fishing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, or paddleboarding. Wimbleball Dam is a lovely place for a picnic, with the chance to watch the water cascading down its imposing face.
The coastal village of Porlock, often described as the jewel in Exmoor’s crown, has a picturesque bay, impressive salt marsh, quaint harbour, and the occasional appearance of a prehistoric forest at very low tide.
Alternatively, head to nearby Minehead, with its beautiful beaches, historic fishing quarter, flower-filled gardens, 14th-century church, and an abundance of tea rooms, pubs, and independent shops, perfect for whiling away a few relaxed hours.
