Why you'll love staying here
Whitehouse Woodwrae is a beautifully presented cottage set on a working farm, with far-reaching views across the glorious Angus Glens and Strath. Thoughtfully designed, the spacious property offers families or groups of friends a comfortable place to unwind and reconnect with nature.
At the heart of the home is the generous sitting room, styled with jewel-toned furnishings, unique artwork, and a blend of contemporary and antique pieces that together create a modern, eclectic feel. Gather around the cosy wood-burning stove for a film night, or settle into the Eames-style lounge chair complete with footstool and admire the glorious countryside views through the large French windows leading out to the decking.
The open-plan kitchen and dining room is well equipped with Shaker-style cabinetry, butcher’s-block worktops, and a large oak dining table with space for everyone to enjoy meals together. Pops of colour and retro accessories lend the room a lively, sociable atmosphere where the whole group will happily congregate. The owners provide a generous welcome hamper and treats for dogs, ensuring every member of the family feels immediately at home.
Downstairs, you’ll find a double bedroom and a spacious bathroom with a sleek white suite, textured tiles, aromatic toiletries, and candles, creating a spa-like ambience whether you’re soaking in a bubble bath or starting your day with a refreshing shower.
Upstairs are two further bedrooms. The master features a king-size bed, ample storage, an en-suite shower room, and French doors that open onto a balcony with exceptional countryside views. Completing the first floor is a twin bedroom ideal for children, along with a landing area offering seating, a small library, and games and jigsaw puzzles for rainy days.
Outside, a large decked terrace has outdoor furniture and a charcoal barbecue set up for al fresco dining while taking in views across the fields where you may spot the farmer at work on his tractor, sheep grazing, or lambs playing in spring. For a touch of luxury, the spa hot tub is perfect for easing tired muscles after a day of hiking or cycling. With built-in lights and speakers, it’s an inviting place to linger into the night, perhaps with a bit of stargazing.
For lovers of the outdoors, this is the ideal holiday home, with plenty to explore in the surrounding area. Guests are welcome to roam the farm’s trails, avoiding fields with livestock, and there are many picturesque walks nearby. A highlight is the circuit walk at Balgavies Loch Nature Reserve, an important wildlife haven. The inland loch, fringed by reedbeds and willow carr, attracts water rails, great crested grebes, and numerous wintering wildfowl, including goldeneyes, teals, and wigeons. Red squirrels thrive here, and otters are often seen playing along the water’s edge.
Within half an hour’s drive are several lovely beaches. Lunan Bay is a sweeping stretch of sand backed by dunes, often quiet and offering a secluded escape on the Angus coast. For a more traditional seaside day out, head to Montrose Beach with its promenade, amusement arcade, children’s splash park, pitch and putt, and ice-cream parlour. It’s perfect for families, though note that dogs are not permitted during the summer months.
The area is also rich in historic buildings and attractions. Highlights include Glamis Castle, showcasing over six centuries of Scottish history, heritage, and magnificent gardens, and the House of Dun, an elegant 18th-century laird’s home filled with intricate plasterwork, period furniture, embroideries, and paintings, complemented by a beautifully recreated Victorian walled garden.
