Situated on the outskirts of Talybont-on-Usk, Ty Fferm Hen is a Grade II listed medieval farmhouse on a working smallholding. Carefully restored retaining vaulted ceilings, timber beams, exposed stonework, slate flooring, and an inglenook fireplace with the old bread oven now housing a wood burning stove, it’s ideal for a family or couple looking to explore the Brecon Beacons and beautiful countryside of mid Wales. Guests should note that the first floor is reached by the original stone, spiral staircase which may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility, and there is limited ceiling height in the bedroom.

Outside, the cottage benefits from a patio complete with a barbecue, a hot tub enclosed in an adjoining barn, and wonderful views of the Sugar Loaf and Black Mountain Range.

The farm, which extends to 34 acres, is home to a variety of animals including chickens, peacocks, cows, goats, pigs, and sheep with the chance to see lambs and calves in spring. There are also some cuddly pet rabbits and friendly cats and dogs which children in particular will delight in meeting.

Sausages, burgers, pork pies, and joints of meat are produced on the farm along with breakfast and barbecue packs, honey, eggs, and seasonal vegetables all available to purchase.

Guests are welcome to walk through the various paths that run through the farm with direct access to the Usk Valley Trail and the Taff Trail just a quarter of a mile away.

The Brecon Beacons National Park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts with opportunities for walking, cycling, climbing, and water sports. Hike the Four Waterfalls Walk, track the Llyn y Fan Fach glacial lake, or challenge yourself to reach the summit of Pen Y Fan. As an International Dark Sky Reserve, the park is also excellent for star gazing, while wildlife watchers should keep an eye out for peregrine falcons, red kites, otters, pine martens, Welsh mountain ponies, and rare arctic alpine plants.

Other attractions nearby include Treberfydd House, a gothic revival country house set in 10 acres of gardens and woodlands; Ellesmere Riding & Trekking Centre; the ruins of Snodhill Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress; and Le Prevost Vineyard, where visitors can enjoy a tour followed by wine tasting.

Talybont-on-Usk is a small village that lies on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, said to be the prettiest in Wales. It has a small general store and several welcoming pubs serving food. For supermarkets and other amenities, Brecon is a 20 minute drive away. Alternatively, Abergavenny, which can be reached in around half an hour, also has a railway station with direct trains to Cardiff, Hereford, and Shrewsbury.
