For a fantastic glamping experience on a working farm, Gin and Toffee offers the perfect rural retreat. This beautifully restored former railway carriage is named after the Elsenham & Thaxted Light Railway, affectionately known by locals as "Gin and Toffee" after two of its main supporters, a spirits merchant from Elsenham and a confectioner from Thaxted.
Furnished in a rustic style, the carriage is full of thoughtful touches to make you feel right at home. Inside, you’ll find a well-equipped kitchenette and the choice of dining at the indoor table or outside using the garden furniture for al fresco meals. The king-size bed has plenty of storage underneath, while the walk-in shower makes it easy to freshen up after a day exploring the beautiful Kent countryside.
Dogs are more than welcome, and there’s even a dedicated dog-washing station, ideal for cleaning up after your day’s adventures.
The surrounding area has open fields, country pubs, and picturesque villages to discover. For a seaside outing, Clacton-on-Sea is about an hour’s drive away, offering a long golden beach, lively promenade, and traditional amusements. Alternatively, head to Cambridge to punt along the river, explore the historic university colleges, or visit one of the city’s many museums and gardens.
As evening falls, return to Gin and Toffee, light the fire pit, unwind with a drink, and take in the view as the sun sets over the farm.
