2 Hillside Cottages is a charming red-brick cottage set on a smallholding in the rural village of Kirton, just a couple of miles north of Felixstowe. Thoughtfully restored, it offers warm and welcoming accommodation for families or couples looking to explore the beautiful Suffolk coast and countryside.
Guests are greeted with a generous welcome pack, including homemade cake, and sometimes a visit from the owner’s friendly dogs.
Inside, the cottage is bright and inviting. Whitewashed walls, wooden floors, and exposed beams provide a timeless backdrop for comfortable furnishings and soft pastel accents that give the rooms a relaxed, homely feel. The country-style kitchen is well equipped with plenty of storage, butcher’s block worktops, and a full range of modern appliances, making it a pleasure to prepare home-cooked meals.
The spacious open-plan living room next door is a lovely space for spending time together, with a dining table for leisurely suppers, and comfortable sofas gathered around a wood-burning stove. As evening falls, it’s a cosy place to watch a film or play a board game while the fire crackles away. At Christmas, a festive tree with twinkling lights adds a magical touch.
Steep, narrow winding stairs, typical of cottages of this age, lead upstairs to two beautifully presented bedrooms. Each is designed with a restful night’s sleep in mind, with comfortable beds, crisp linens, and soft blankets for cooler nights. In the morning, you won’t need an alarm clock, as the resident cockerel provides a natural wake-up call. A contemporary bathroom completes the accommodation, offering both a bath and a shower.
To the front of the cottage is an enclosed lawned garden, a safe space for children to play and dogs to run around. It’s also a lovely spot to sit with a glass of wine in the evening as the sun sets over the surrounding fields, where you may spot wildlife such as rabbits, deer, and foxes.
The smallholding is home to chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys, and the owners grow vegetables and plants that are available to buy in the farm shop, along with fresh eggs and honey.
Nearby Felixstowe is a traditional Edwardian seaside resort with a sheltered beach, promenade, and pier. There are plenty of places to eat, from family-friendly pubs and charming tearooms to seafront cafés and modern restaurants. The town also has a thriving high street with boutiques and independent shops alongside well-known brands, as well as a railway station, making it easy to explore the region without needing the car.
