The Barn

Meadowsweet Farm,
Bicknoller,
Somerset,
England

A beautifully presented stone and cob barn conversion with a wood burning stove set on a working livestock farm on the western edge of the Quantock Hills.

Why you'll love staying here

The Barn is a beautifully appointed rural retreat set on a working farm in a picturesque valley near the charming village of Bicknoller. With easy access to both Exmoor National Park and the Quantock Hills, it provides an idyllic base for families or groups of friends looking to explore the very best of the West Country.

Lovingly converted from a traditional stone and cob former farm building, The Barn has been thoughtfully restored to preserve its original character, with oak beams, vaulted ceilings, and exposed stone walls.

On arrival, guests are welcomed by a generous boot room, ideal for storing coats, walking boots, and outdoor gear after days out exploring the surrounding countryside. Beyond, the spacious living area showcases the building’s original architecture, where timber trusses cleverly divide the space into a series of inviting, sociable zones. Whitewashed walls, hardwood floors, and terracotta tiles provide an elegant backdrop to the carefully curated furnishings.

The country-style kitchen is both stylish and practical, with ample storage, butcher’s block worktops, and an impressive range cooker, perfect for relaxed holiday cooking. A large farmhouse dining table nearby offers plenty of space for leisurely meals and sharing stories from the day’s adventures.

In the sitting area, Chesterfield sofas are arranged around a wood-burning stove set within a handsome brick fireplace with its original mantle, creating a wonderfully cosy space to unwind after a day spent on the hills or by the coast.

The Barn offers four beautifully designed bedrooms, providing flexible accommodation for mixed groups. One bedroom is located on the ground floor, another on the lower ground floor, with two further bedrooms upstairs, accessed via separate staircases. Each room has been thoughtfully styled in soothing neutral tones, with comfortable beds and crisp linens to ensure a restful night’s sleep. Completing the accommodation are a sleek shower room and a stylish bathroom with a deep freestanding bath, perfect for an indulgent soak at the end of the day.

Outside, a charming patio is a lovely suntrap, ideal for al fresco lunches or evening drinks as the sun sets over the surrounding fields.

The 30-acre farm offers guests the chance to experience rural life first hand, with woodland, wildflower meadows, and a mill stream to explore. Collect freshly laid free-range eggs from the hens for breakfast, meet the friendly farm cats, and watch ponies and sheep grazing in the fields. Springtime is particularly special, when children will delight in meeting newborn lambs. The farm is also rich in wildlife, with blackcaps, goldcrests, and great spotted woodpeckers in the woods, and skylarks, meadow pipits, and stonechats in the open meadows, alongside an abundance of butterflies and insects attracted by the wildflowers.

Just a mile away lies the picturesque village of Bicknoller, with thatched cottages, red stone houses, a 15th-century church, village shop, and welcoming inn serving food. Steep footpaths from the village lead up to the ridge of the Quantock Hills, where breathtaking views unfold across unspoilt countryside, landscapes that once inspired the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth.
