The Wain House is a beautifully appointed 19th-century barn conversion set on a working farm in the rural village of Westhope, within the scenic Hope Valley. Once part of a stable block, it has been lovingly restored to retain a wealth of original features while offering stylish and comfortable accommodation for families or groups of friends looking to explore the beautiful Shropshire countryside.
The country-style kitchen forms the heart of the home, with ample storage and a full range of modern appliances to make cooking a pleasure. A spacious pine farmhouse table provides the perfect place for everyone to gather, whether enjoying hearty breakfasts before a day’s adventure or relaxed evening meals together.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the elegant living room, a welcoming space that showcases the building’s heritage with its beamed ceiling and solid timber trusses. Whitewashed walls, solid wood flooring, and neutral décor with rustic accents create a bright and airy atmosphere, while plump sofas invite you to unwind with a glass of wine or enjoy a film together.
Christmas is a particularly magical time to visit. The cottage is beautifully decorated with a tree and wreath, and guests are welcomed with a wonderful festive hamper packed with freshly-baked mince pies, a bottle of mulled wine, Christmas chocolates, and a poinsettia plant. Twinkling lights festoon the courtyard, creating a truly enchanting setting, especially if snow dusts the surrounding fields.
Completing the ground floor is a spacious bedroom with its own en-suite shower room, ideal for guests with limited mobility.
A stunning vaulted staircase leads to two further bedrooms upstairs, both thoughtfully designed for a restful night’s sleep with comfortable beds, crisp linen, and soft blankets for cooler evenings. These rooms share a family bathroom with a deep bath set beneath a skylight.
Guests also have access to a fantastic shared games room located in an external barn, complete with a pool table, table tennis, table football, and air hockey, alongside a wide selection of board games and jigsaw puzzles, perfect for keeping the whole family entertained on wetter days. A gym is also available, equipped with a cross trainer, rowing machine, and free weights for those wishing to maintain their fitness routine while away.
Outside, a secluded patio with dining furniture and a barbecue is a sunny spot for morning coffee or leisurely al fresco lunches while taking in the beautiful views across the surrounding farmland. There is also a hot tub, ideal for soothing tired muscles after a day of walking or cycling.
The farm itself has been in the same family for over 100 years and extends across 250 acres of arable land and livestock pasture. A network of footpaths winds through open fields, meadows, and woodland, with the owner providing helpful guides suggesting local walks. Along the way, look out for butterflies and bees drawn to the wildflowers, and keep an eye out for yellowhammers, wheatears, meadow pipits, and other farmland birds.
Just a few miles away lies the market town of Church Stretton. Known as “Little Switzerland” by the Victorians thanks to the dramatic surrounding Shropshire Hills, it offers a delightful selection of independent boutiques, antique shops, tea rooms, and cosy pubs, with many of Shropshire’s attractions within easy driving distance.
