The Barnstay is a beautifully converted former grain store set within a picturesque farm estate in the village of Silchester. Creatively restored with exceptional attention to detail, it offers stylish and welcoming accommodation for extended families or groups of friends looking to explore the beautiful Hampshire countryside.
Situated on the Hampshire–Berkshire border, the timber-clad barn retains much of its original character, with timber beams, vaulted ceilings, and exposed brickwork adding warmth and authenticity. Locally sourced antique and vintage furniture, along with upcycled materials from the farm, blend effortlessly with carefully chosen artwork and handcrafted pieces, including handblown Hampshire glassware.
The spacious open-plan living area is a wonderful social hub at the heart of the home. Whitewashed walls and solid oak flooring create a bright, elegant backdrop for country-inspired décor in soft, muted jewel tones.
The kitchen has deep blue shaker-style cabinetry paired with butcher’s block worktops and a full range of modern appliances, making cooking a pleasure. A breakfast bar is the perfect spot for casual dining or enjoying a drink while meals are prepared.
For those wishing to relax completely, the farm’s in-house chef can be booked to create a private dining experience. Ingredients such as fruit, vegetables, and herbs are harvested from the farm’s kitchen garden or foraged from the surrounding land, complemented by carefully sourced local produce.
A generous farmhouse dining table provides ample space for everyone to gather for hearty breakfasts and leisurely evening meals, the ideal setting for sharing food and stories after a day of exploring.
The sitting area is particularly inviting, with plush velvet sofas, occasional chairs, and ottomans arranged around a crackling wood-burning stove. Large picture windows flood the space with natural light while framing lovely views of the garden, creating a relaxing place to unwind in the evenings.
On the ground floor are two bedrooms. The king-size bedroom has a stunning en-suite bathroom with a sleek walk-in shower and a deep freestanding roll-top bath. Adjacent is a twin bedroom, making this level ideal for families wishing to stay close together.
Upstairs are four further bedrooms, each with its own en-suite shower room. Designed with comfort in mind, all bedrooms have hotel-quality mattresses, crisp Egyptian cotton linen, and soft blankets for cooler nights, ensuring a restful sleep.
Outside, the property is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, with a pond to the front and several seating areas.
Guests are also welcome to explore the wider farm, where a thriving kitchen garden sits among manicured lawns and planters brimming with flowers, with acres of pastureland stretching beyond. Sustainability is central to the farm’s ethos, with native planting schemes encouraging wildlife habitats that attract butterflies, bees, and birds. A herd of rare-breed sheep helps maintain the grounds naturally, and children will love meeting the lambs in spring, along with the friendly pet pigs and pygmy goats.
The Barnstay’s guests enjoy access to a range of facilities at Silchester Farm. The outdoor swimming pool, open from spring to early autumn, offers a peaceful place to relax, while a tennis court provides opportunities for more active pursuits. Bicycles and tricycles are available to hire, making it easy to explore the estate.
There is also an on-site farm shop offering locally sourced produce, freshly baked goods and gourmet treats made using ingredients from the farm, unique gifts, and the farm’s own premium gin, crafted using botanicals handpicked from the kitchen garden. A charming rustic bar and kitchen on site hosts a programme of seasonal dining experiences, brunches, and traditional Sunday lunches throughout the year.
