The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of Britain’s finest dog walking destinations, with high, open landscapes that are largely accessible on foot and without the crowds that make more popular national parks difficult in summer. The open moorland of the central Beacons, the Black Mountains to the east, and the Black Mountain (Mynydd Du) to the west all offer walking on open access land where dogs can run freely, and the wide ridges give far reaching views over a landscape that feels genuinely wild and unspoilt. The Beacons are also a designated Dark Sky Reserve, one of only a handful in Wales, which makes farm stays here worth considering in autumn and winter when the high ground is clear and the starry nights are extraordinary. The valleys below the main ridge provide easier alternatives for walks. The Usk Valley, the Wye Valley on the eastern edge, and the wooded cwms of the Black Mountains offer riverside and woodland walking that suits dogs of every age and fitness. Dogs must be kept on leads around livestock, which is present throughout the farming valleys below the open hill.
