Powk Meadow Farmhouse

Lower Green Farm,
Pembridge,
Herefordshire,
England

Why you'll love staying here

Situated on the Herefordshire and Welsh border, Powk Meadow Farmhouse is a beautiful 18th century black and white timber home, complemented by a contemporary extension. It lies at the heart of 200 acres of mixed farmland, where apple orchards, cornfields, sunflower meadows, and grazing cattle paint a quintessential rural scene.

The cottage has been beautifully furnished in a charming country style, with upcycled vintage farm equipment and furniture that reflect the farm’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Eco-conscious touches include heating provided by solar panels and a biomass boiler, while water from the hot tub is recycled for use around the farm.

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and nowhere is that truer than in this charming farmhouse. Fully equipped with a traditional Butler sink, butcher’s block-style worktops, Shaker cabinets, and classic white tiles, it combines practicality with warm, homely character. Whimsical touches, such as farm animal prints, add to its welcoming feel. It also includes an original Rayburn, perfect for warming your hands or slow-cooking your favourite dish, along with a conventional oven for those who prefer a more familiar cooking experience. The centrepiece of the kitchen is a large farmhouse dining table, the perfect spot to gather with your family to share memories or plan the next day’s adventures.

The cosy living room offers lovely views across the fields and includes a wood-burning stove in a red-brick fireplace and comfortable sofas for curling up with a good book, enjoying a board game, or settling in for a film night.

Upstairs, you’ll find two beautifully decorated bedrooms in rich jewel tones. The master bedroom has an opulent super king-size bed set against an elegant moss-green panelled wall, along with a charming pink day bed. The second bedroom has a double bed beneath high beamed ceilings and is divided by original black timber beams running from floor to ceiling. At one end, a reclaimed wooden bench creates a cosy snug. They share a stylish family bathroom, with classic white metro tiles, an elegant freestanding bath, and a separate walk-in shower. Touches of green bamboo add a natural element, enhancing the charm of this relaxing space.

Outside, the garden feels more like an open-air living room, with a patio, neatly kept lawn, colourful flower beds, and a variety of seating options, including a parasol to provide shade on sunny days. There’s also a Nordic-style barbecue grill and an outdoor dining area, perfect for leisurely meals alfresco. Step up onto the raised terrace and you’ll discover a spring-water, wood-fired hot tub and a glass-fronted luxury sauna cabin, offering stunning views over the orchard and surrounding farmland, as well as an outdoor shower. For those feeling more energetic, a covered table tennis area provides the ideal spot to let off some steam.

The farm is home to a variety of wildflowers and wildlife, including bees, butterflies, owls, and deer. The low light pollution also makes it a lovely spot for stargazing on clear nights.

The nearby village of Pembridge offers a choice of cosy pubs and restaurants, along with an arts and crafts gallery, and the remains of the original Pembridge Castle, visible in its historic earthworks. Close by, the beautiful Westonbury Mill Water Gardens are set around a winding brook, with colourful moisture-loving plants, and a spiral viewing mound that provides wonderful views across the surrounding countryside.

Pembridge also forms part of the renowned Black and White Villages Trail, a 40-mile circular route showcasing hundreds of photogenic medieval timber-framed buildings. Along the way, you can visit traditional craft cider makers, see orchards in bloom during spring, watch apples being harvested in autumn, and learn how local cider is produced before sampling it for yourself.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the River Wye offers excellent opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and even wild swimming at several popular spots. Meanwhile, Offa’s Dyke, the ancient earthwork that roughly follows the border between England and Wales and stretches across eight counties, provides miles of scenic walking and cycling trails.

Just a short drive away is Leominster, a charming market town with a flourishing antiques scene. Behind its modest Georgian façades lie surprisingly vast interiors filled with quirky rooms and characterful corners, perfect for leisurely browsing. Book lovers will also enjoy a trip to Hay-on-Wye, famous for its independent bookshops and its celebrated annual literary festival.
